AppsFire App Star Awards finalist 2009

We are very proud to have been named a finalist in App Star’s “up and coming” apps competition! There are 35 finalists and the 3 winners will be chosen and announced at LeWeb conference (an amazing tech conference held in Frnace) on stage Dec 9th in front of 1800+ savvy internet users, bloggers, journalists. This is an amazing achievement for us, given that GateGuru was not even launched when the competition was announced.

Also check out this video which has a nice plug for GateGuru at the 0:24 mark.

We are thrilled to announce that we have received approval from Apple and that GateGuru will launch on Monday, December 7th. After 11 months since the original idea, we couldn’t be happier or prouder of the first version of GateGuru. There are still A LOT of new features, things to improve, ways to optimize, etc., but we think V1.0 is a great initial product to put in the hands of travelers.

The airport consumer market and overall experience is quickly evolving, and we believe that GateGuru will be at the forefront of that change. Simply put, GateGuru makes the airport experience better, and who doesn’t want that.

Happy weekend travels, and we will see you on Monday!

App Store Update

Written By dan | 2 comments

Many people have asked about the status of GateGuru, so we figured that we would just blog what is going on. We first submitted the app on October 15th and on November 7th we received a call from Apple that they were rejecting the app for a few technical reasons. We spent the following week and a half making those technical changes and we then resumbitted GateGuru to Apple on November 19th. We have been told that since the reasons for rejection were well understood, that we would receive an expedited review process (meaning it would take “days” not “weeks”). We are hoping to receive approval from Apple this week so that we can get GateGuru out there as soon as possible. GateGuru could not be released at a better time, as holiday travel time is particularly hellish, making GateGuru ean even more valuable tool. We are hoping to launch next week and will keep everyone posted. Thanks for the continued patience and happy travels this holiday week!

For those who do not know, Mary Meeker does an annual report about macro trends within the internet space. Her latest report just came out and here it is:
Mary Meeker’s Internet Presentation 2009

Mary does an excellent job each year with this report as it is a combination of macro trends for the economy and the internet space. She tends to often nail what the “big theme” will be over the next year or two. In this presentation, you will see that she spends a significant amount of time on the mobile ecosystem. She has often covered mobile in her reports, but it is clear from this report that she views the next few years as huge ones for the mobile ecosystem. Here at GateGuru, we obviously agree and are excited that people are finally waking up to the opportunity presented by mobile.

I am proud to announce that we have submitted GateGuru to Apple. This is a major milestone for all of us involved. It wasn’t that long ago, but I still clearly remember the day that I developed the idea for GateGuru (see the story in the About tab). I must admit that my first idea wasn’t for GateGuru to be an iPhone app, but rather a book (a la Zagat for airports). Luckily my fiancé was able to quite easily convince me that this was much better as an app than a book!

So after 9 exhausting months, including leaving my job as a venture capitalist to run the new company full time, I am overjoyed at the GateGuru product that we have submitted to Apple. Hopefully the review process will be fast and easy, and consumers can start to experience the richness of GateGuru as soon as possible.

There are lots of updates to come (both to the app and the blog) so stay tuned. Feel free to reach out to us in the Support tab or you can email me personally at dan[at]gateguruapp[dot]com.

Safe travels.
